The Linux Migration – Installing VeraCrypt on Ubuntu Linux

What is VeraCrypt?

VeraCrypt is a free open source disk encryption software for Windows, Mac OSX and Linux based on TrueCrypt 7.1a. Its a successor of TrueCrypt, as the development of TrueCrypt was stopped. If you are existing user of TrueCrypt, You can click here to learn how to install TrueCrypt instead

Why to install VeraCrypt?

Its an encryption software so it will encrypt and keep your data safe from anyone who doesn’t know the password, even if they have access to your hardware. At least that’s what VeraCrypt’s team says.

Similarly, This means if you loose the password, you are not going to be able to recover the data as there is no backdoor. Same, that’s what VeraCrypt’s team says.

Some specific features of VeraCrypt from the website are..

  • Creates a virtual encrypted disk within a file and mounts it as a real disk.
  • Encrypts an entire partition or storage device such as USB flash drive or hard drive.
  • Encrypts a partition or drive where Windows is installed.
  • Encryption is automatic, real-time and on the fly.
